Similar Players | How Does it Work?

How Similar Players works in all four leagues, the NBA/WNBA model, and what each column means.

What are “Similar Players”?

Similar Players shows recent games by players who resemble the one you're researching, against the same opponent. It works in all four leagues (NBA, WNBA, NFL and MLB), including fantasy markets.

Modes:

  • By PropsMadness (Recommended, NBA and WNBA): our similarity model blends:

    • Position

    • Dominant Play Type (DPT)

    • Dominant Shot Zone (DSZ)

    • Catch-and-shoot vs Pull-up tendencies

    • Minutes played

    • Usage rate

  • By Position (NBA, WNBA and NFL): players at the same position (e.g., G vs G), without playstyle or shot zone analysis. Basketball positions: G, F-G, F, F-C, C-F, C.

  • By Hand (MLB): groups players by handedness.

MLB note: batters are compared against the same starting pitcher they face today, so Similar Players posts once the probable pitcher is announced.

Data columns explained

  • Per-game diff %: on each row, the % difference between the closing line and the stat in that game. Example: a 15.5 line and 11 points is -29%.

  • PTS: points the similar player scored in that game.

  • LINE: closing points line from the highest-rated available sportsbook in our sharpness grading. FanDuel currently ranks sharpest for player props.

  • AVG DIFF: average difference (raw numbers) across the sample.

  • AVG DIFF %: the same average as a percentage, across all similar players.

  • HIT RATE: share of games where the player went over the closing line. Example: 1/15 = 7% hit rate.

Exclusion rules (for accuracy)

We automatically leave out:

  • Games with an unusual amount of minutes (e.g., injury or overtime blowouts)

  • Games where sportsbooks didn't offer the player (no line)

  • Players with very low season averages (e.g., 2.3 PPG)

Why it helps

Instead of one player's games, you see how players with comparable scoring styles did in the same matchup.
